New Quest- Starting Portrait Paintings in 2023

A New Year’s goal I have for 2023 is to start and master portrait paintings. As of February 2023, I’ve done maybe 3, a couple of live model paintings and a self portrait in my art classes during college. I was very nervous and hesitant.

Once I started however, I realized painting portraits is like painting anything else. You start with a sketch, then add the big flat shapes and colors, then add more detail as you go. My first try was of course not all that impressive. I painted Walter White (Heisenberg) from the show “Breaking Bad”. The next day, I painted it again but this time with the help of the Patreon tutorial from Paint Coach. It turned out much better. Over the next weeks of February and into March I painted several more portraits. At one point I decided to paint brides and focus on wedding painting.

The following portraits start with my latest work, finished on March 13th, 2023 and go back in time to my first one which I started and finished on Jan 26, 2023. One thing that completely elevated my portraits was buying a proportional divider. With this nifty tool I am able to measure out the head and parts of the face to make sure they are precise and accurate. The first painting I did with this was the “Black Widow on Vormir” painting of Scarlett Johansson. Please enjoy!
